It’s been a long year in Transylvania County with citizens having to travel out of the county to get their vehicle tags and registrations but drives and wait times should be getting much shorter.
Transylvania County has opened a License Plate Agency under contract with the North Carolina Department of Motor Vehicles as of February 2.
Transylvania County Commissioners approved moving forward with adding the License Plate Agency as a county service last fall.“Our county government is made of employees who are dedicated to serving our citizens. Our board knows that having a tag office in the county is important for our citizens and a public service that was sorely missed when the last one closed. We are happy to provide this service within county government,” Commission Chairman Jason Chappell said.
The county commissioners authorized capital improvements to the County Tax Administration office to host the LPA office. Tax Administrator Jessica McCall’s department will house the LPA.
“Our staff is excited to be able to offer this service to Transylvania County. We have had county maintenance working tirelessly to get the office ready while our staff has been in training with NCDMV to be ready for the opening. Everyone has really come together to launch this new venture,” McCall said.
With the new opening, citizens will be able to handle tag and registration matters in the same office they are used to paying taxes. The pairing of LPA within a tax office is a new approach for Transylvania County.“Our tax office is well known in our community for providing great customer service while also performing a tough job. When we began exploring taking on the LPA service, it seemed like a natural fit for Ms. McCall and her team at the tax office. I have full confidence they will prove to be a valued asset to our citizens,” County Manager Jaime Laughter said.
The office is open 8:30 am- 5:00 pm, Monday through Friday.
