The Transylvania County Planning and Community Development Department received the 2018 Merit Award for the 2025 Transylvania County Comprehensive Plan by the American Planning Association and National Association of County Planners. As noted by Chairman Chapman, “Competing with other small jurisdictions across the country, this award is a great honor for Transylvania County and truly acknowledges the hard work of our dedicated staff, the planning board and all of the citizens that participated in the development of this plan that was developed entirely in-house.” Commissioner Mike Hawkins was very instrumental in the plan’s initial development along with the questionnaire that generated over 2,100 responses from Transylvania County citizens. Hawkins shared that, “As the plan progressed, it was clear that there were many different views on how the County should develop and the types of action items to be continued or identified – while being consistent with the County Commissioners’ Strategic Goals. This recognition is great.”
