COMMUNITY APPEARANCE INITIATIVE
The goals of the Transylvania County Community Appearance Initiative (CAI) are:
- Preserve and protect the natural beauty of Transylvania County
- Preserve and protect property rights
- Promote and protect the health and safety of citizens of Transylvania County.
- Promote economic development while protecting individuals and businesses from burdensome regulations.
COMMUNITY CENTERS
Community Centers are Transylvania County's gems, owned and directed by their individual communities, they preserve their heritage and music, share meals, take care of their neighbors, and provide a wide variety of programs that create a shared sense of belonging and ultimately strengthen the social, cultural and economic vibrancy of each place.
HISTORIC PRESERVATION
Transylvania County, established in 1861, is filled with historic structures from rural farmhouses to downtown commercial buildings. There are 18 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic places, along with two historic districts. There are 21 locally designated historic landmarks.
GRANT WRITING
Working with our community partners, the department seeks out grant funding to support the County Commissioners' objectives and projects.
ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION
Transylvania County Board of Commissioners' Strategic Plan and the recently adopted 2025 Comprehensive Plan identify active transportation initiatives that are designed to improve the health of our citizens and increase the safety of roads.
HOUSING
Transylvania County supports and administers grants and programs surrounding Workforce Housing and Home Repair Grants and Loans to help ensure homes remain affordable, safe and sanitary.
