

You may have seen the white high top
vans going through town or coming to
pick up a neighbor. The symbol on
the vans is Transport (Transylvania
People Oriented Rural
Transportation). These vans are
provided by Transylvania County
through the County’s Transportation
Department, and provide
transportation for a number of
services for the citizens of the
County. The system averages
providing 162 trips per day.
Senior Adult Transportation




The county vans
provide transportation for many
“mature” adults (60 years young or
older) throughout Transylvania
County. These passengers are
transported to Nutrition sites each
weekday. The Nutrition sites that
the county vans
provide services to are the Quebec
Community Center and Silvermont. The
county vans also provide
transportation services for these
passengers to shopping centers,
recreational centers, as well as
financial and utility locations
(post office, bill payments, etc.).
For the 05-06 fiscal year 10,793
trips were provided.
Handicapped / Disabled
Transportation




The county vans provide
transportation for people with
mental and physical disabilities
from home to Transylvania Vocational
Services (TVS) on a daily basis.
Lift-equipped vehicles are utilized
to help passengers who are mobility
challenged. For the 05-06 fiscal
year 8,951 trips were provided.
Child Transportation

The county vans
provide transportation for
pre-school age children from home to
the County’s Child Development
center on a daily basis. Children
are also transported to other day
care centers located within
Transylvania County. The vans are
equipped with child care seats. A
rider is also employed in order to
care for the children while they are
being transported on the county
vans. For the 05-06 fiscal year
4,806 trips were provided.
Work First Transportation

The county vans
coordinate with the Department of
Social Services to transport clients
involved in the Work First program.
These participants are transported
to local trade schools or to the job
site. If a participant in the Work
First program has pre-school age
children, the county van
will provide transportation to
the County’s day care facility or
other approved day care facilities
within Transylvania County. For the
05-06 fiscal year 2,133 trips were
provided.
General Public Transportation
The general public may ride the
county vans at a cost
of $1.00 per person each way within
Transylvania County. General public
transportation is for shopping
trips, hair / barber appointments,
employment, mail, bill payments,
etc… for any individuals not
involved with other agency programs.
All requests for transportation must
be made by noon at least one (1)
workday in advance. Fares are
expected to be paid upon boarding
the vehicle. For the 05-06 fiscal
year 5,179 trips were provided.

HOLIDAYS.
Med-Drive/Dialysis/Medicaid
Transportation
MED-Drive transportation is
available for citizens of
Transylvania County. In-county
medical transportation is sponsored
by Transylvania County as a
community service to the residents
of Transylvania County. This is a
service for persons over the age of
60, or those who meet special
eligibility requirements who have no
other means of transportation. The
goal is to provide round-trip
transportation within the county for
those having scheduled appointments
with doctors, outpatient services,
public health or other health
related appointments. This service
only provides transportation for
scheduled medical appointments. This
is not an emergency transportation
service. The vans are handicapped
accessible. Med-Drive Transportation
is provided between 9:00 AM and 3:00
PM on Tuesdays and Thursdays with
the exception of holidays. For the
05-06 fiscal year 1,361 trips were
provided.
Dialysis Transportation
The county currently provides
dialysis transportation via vans to
the Hendersonville Dialysis Center.
Dialysis transportation is provided
on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.
The ridership for the 05-06 fiscal
year is calculated with the general
public and Medicaid numbers.
Medicaid Transportation
Individuals must be approved through
the Department of Social Services to
be eligible for Medicaid. Once
approved by DSS, individuals must
contact the Transylvania County
Transportation office at
828-884-3283 to sign up for the
Medicaid Transportation Program. For
the 05-06 fiscal year 6,922 trips
were provided.
Additional
Information
A Personal Care
Assistant (PCA) is a person who
needs to go with the passenger to
provide necessary medical or
personal assistance. Passengers
who are unable to care for
themselves are encouraged to travel
with a PCA. A PCA is not required to
pay a fare. If a PCA will be
traveling with a client, the
transportation office must be
notified at the time the reservation
is made.
Service animals, not
pets, are allowed on any county
transportation vehicle.
Request for medical
transportation have to be in prior to 4:30PM.
The County provides
29% of the funding for these
services with the remaining costs
being funded by State and Federal
grants.
