The Environmental Health Section of the Transylvania County Department of Public Health is dedicated to the protection of the health of citizens of Transylvania County through the enforcement of state sewage, food and lodging regulations, and other environmental health programs.

SEWAGE DISPOSAL
Permits and approvals are issued in accordance with North Carolina Sewage Disposal Rules.  Permits are required for new construction, repairs of failing systems, and approvals of existing systems in obtaining a building permit.  Appropriate permits must be obtained and applicable fees paid prior to construction or repair of any on-site system.

WATER SAMPLING
Water sampling is provided upon request from a health care provider.  Places under inspection by the Transylvania County Department of Public Health are sampled routinely.  Education is available as requested.

PRIVATE DRINKING WATER WELLS
Local rules require that property owners obtain a permit before constructing, repairing or abandoning a well in Transylvania County.

INSECT & RODENT CONTROL
Investigation of complaints are conducted routinely to abate nuisances caused by insect/rodent harborage & breeding areas.

SWIMMING POOLS
Permits and inspections of public swimming pools are in accordance with North Carolina Rules and Regulations.  Consultation is provided upon request. Plan review is required.

INVESTIGATION OF COMPLAINTS & NUISANCES
Routine investigation in food, sewage, solid waste and other related matters to ensure compliance with all applicable rules and regulations.  Complaints not within the jurisdiction of programs are referred to appropriate agencies for resoultion.

LEAD ABATEMENT
Conducts investigations upon determination of a child's elevated blood lead level, or by request of the Division of Child Development.  Educational information on lead poisioning prevention and abatement measures is available.

TATTOO PARLORS
Under North Carolina law, tattoo artists and parlors are required to be permitted and inspected by the Transylvania County Department of Public Health. 

CONSULTATION & INFORMATION SERVICES
Provides a variety of educational opportunities for community and professional groups.  Consultation provided as needed on any topic listed above.
