AGRICULTURAL ADVISORY BOARD

Purpose: Advisory to the Board of Commissioners; facilitates communications with non-farming Transylvanians; protects the rural nature and character of the county; encourages and protects the economic viability of the agricultural community; increased the protection of the agricultural community from adverse complaints; increases identity and pride in the agricultural community and its way of life. Reviews and approves or disapproves applications for qualified farmland and voluntary farmland districts; holds public hearings pursuant to ordinance; advisory to the Board of Commissioners on issues affecting the agricultural economy or activities within Transylvania County.

Membership: 7 members appointed by the BOC. 5 of the 7 members shall be actively engaged in farming; the others shall be from the non-farming community. Members serve a 3-year term (staggered), 2- term limit (after any partial term is complete, or extended if a waiver of the 2-term limit has been granted); terms expire in April. The chairman is elected annually by the membership.

Meetings: The Agricultural Advisory Board meets the second Wednesday of the months of January, April, July and October at the Cooperative Extension Center.
